Litigation Paralegal Specialist

Job description:

Where you fit in

You will join Shell’s Global Litigation legal team, reporting to one of our Legal Counsel in the Strategy and Coordination team. The role covers a wide variety of work, including support in the management of various U.S. legal dockets and working with our Litigation Information Group in Houston, Texas on document management and collection. The candidate needs to be flexible as working hours may be outside normal working hours from time to time, due to the global team location. Must be able to work independently and remotely with instructing lawyers and staff who are not co-located.

What’s the role?

As a litigation paralegal, you will be supporting a legal team of lawyers and support specialists on a variety of dockets and projects. A key focus will be handling information for personal injury cases, supporting the management of third-party subpoenas, monitoring legal proceedings before Courts, drafting legal documents and document management. The role will also include support of various dockets of cases, such as condemnation, small claims and personal injury. This role will support cases from a variety of regions globally.
The successful candidate will have a strong personal drive and the ability to maintain resilience when managing a varied workload, sometimes under time constraints. He/she will be confident and credible with an aptitude for rapidly building and maintaining trust and the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team to provide robust and comprehensive advice to stakeholders. Beyond that, we encourage the identification of process improvements, contributing to continuous improvement and shaping the way we collaborate and work.


What we need from you

The ideal candidate could be either a Paralegal who has worked for an international company in the litigation department, OR a Paralegal within a major law firm who has experience working with international clients and supporting them globally. Prior responsibilities in personal injury cases, data privacy, data collection, preservation, and general legal spend would be advantageous. This role would suit someone who is looking to build upon their career as a Paralegal within a large multinational business.

It is vital you are a strong communicator and have good computer skills. You will need to confidently use Word, Excel, and PowerPoint as well as electronic filing and document and matter management systems, after initial training. Experience with eDiscovery software such as Relativity will be a plus.

It is your personal skills that will set you apart. We are keen to hear from men and women who are highly organized, detail oriented, adept at litigation and capable of prioritizing multiple tasks, even when deadlines are tight. You will be liaising with colleagues and contacts at all levels of the business, so you will need to have a co-operative spirit and be a confident communicator, both in person and on paper. Requirements:
Specific job responsibilities will include:

  • Research and respond to third party subpoenas

  • Update settlement reporting to support US team in case assessments and provisioning

  • Manage lease and royalty payment disputes in the trading business

  • Assist on small claims risk docket, including personal injury and property damage cases

  • Part of document hold and collections team

  • Tracking document hold and collection statistics quarterly

  • Data Privacy liaison

  • Compile quarterly status reports for certain US dockets based on consistent data collection


Qualifications include:

  • Experience supporting litigation dockets

  • Experience with the Microsoft Office suite of products

  • Knowledge of data privacy laws

  • General bachelor’s degree (preferably in business or management);

  • Working with a document management system

  • Strong organisational skills

  • Collaborative – a good team player

  • Good interpersonal and communication skills

  • Proven ability to work to deadlines and prioritize multiple projects

  • English C1

  • Resilience under pressure as the successful candidate will be supporting a busy team of lawyers and para-professional
