What are the World Games?
Although they are held every four years, similarly to the Olympic Games, they include those sports, that do not qualify for the most famous sports competition, and are scheduled one year after the official Olympic Games. The disciplines included in the World Games are either discontinued in the Olympic Games, or are still too niche to be accepted by the International Olympic Committee. Their number is not set and depends on the access to facilities in the host city.
The sports at the World Games 2017 fall into different categories, including Artistic and Dance Sports, Ball Sports, Martial Arts, Precision Sports, Strength Sports, Trend Sports and a special category of Inivtation Sports (those selected by the host city and by Wrocław’s choice this year being: American Football, Indoor Rowing, Kickboxing and Speedway).
Host city – Wrocław
Wrocław in Poland will be the 10th city to host the competition, thus making Poland the 5th European host country of the World Games. The city of Wrocław, inhabited by over 600,000 people, is bursting with life and makes a perfect location for a mass event like this. Its beautiful architecture, historic city centre, comfortable international connections and overall safety add to its popularity as a tourist destination and must have been decisive factors in selecting Wrocław as the host city.
If you are a foreigner staying in Poland, or even better, in Wrocław, you can still join the games and support your national team! The World Games 2017 take place 20-30 July in Wrocław and affordable tickets for various World Games competitions are still available.
Join the sports contests or the opening ceremony starting on 20 July 2017 at 7 pm in the Wrocław Stadium.
